However, the Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3 is designed for those who work or who want to work in particular specialist areas with children, primarily supporting literacy, numeracy, extra-curricular activities, and in planning and delivering learning activities under the direction of a teacher. To do this, this course is an amalgamation of the Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools level 3, with an addition 4 modular units in these more specialist areas.

You will learn how to keep children safe from harm, how they should develop, what to do if they develop differently from other children, and how to maintain positive relationships with children.

What’s the deal with the work placement?

To complete the Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3, you are required to complete 50 hours of a work placement. This is a compulsory part of the course, but can be voluntary or paid, so if you already work as a care and support worker, you will already be doing this work. You will be responsible for arranging your own placement, so if you aren’t currently employed in a relevant role, you should look into placement opportunities as soon as possible.

You will be provided with a comprehensive guide to setting up your placement, including details of the sorts of activities you will need to complete. If you are already in a schools setting, but you don’t normally do these activities with the children you support, you will need to make further arrangements to ensure you fulfil the requirements of the course.

Overview of work placements

In order to successfully complete a Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning In Schools (RQF) Level 3 qualification you are required to complete a compulsory work placement. The work placement can be paid or voluntary and each learner is responsible for arranging their own placement.

Along with their first set of course materials, learners will receive a comprehensive guide giving them plenty of information on what is required during the placement, how to set it up and the types of activities that they will need to complete (including examples of the types of evidence that will need to be submitted).

  • Understand how to monitor children and young people’s development and interventions that should take place if this is not following the expected pattern
  • Understand the importance of early intervention to support the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people
  • Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young people’s development

Module 3: Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults

  • Understand the principles of developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults
  • Understand legislation, policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection

Module 4: Understand How to Safeguard the Wellbeing of Children and Young People

  • Understand how to support children and young people to assess and manage risk for themselves
  • Understand appropriate responses to accidents, incidents emergencies and illness in work settings and off site visits

Module 7: Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

  • Understand the impact of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people
  • Be able to support inclusion and inclusive practices in work with children and young people

Module 11: Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults

Module 13: Support literacy development

Requirements

Although this course does not require any formal qualifications, a 50-hour work placement during the course is compulsory. The purpose of the work placement is for you and your assessor to gather evidence of the practical application of your newly acquired knowledge and skills. It’s great if you know the information, but the best way you can show it is by demonstrating your work.

Assessment

You’ll get a question paper at the end of each lesson, and this should take you around 1-2 hours to complete. These papers, once marked by your assessor, will enable your tutor to continually monitor your progress and provide help and advice where needed. The course is estimated to require around 232 hours of study time in total.
